You downloaded your QR code and noticed it goes edge-to-edge with no white border around it. This is intentional for square QR codes, giving you full control over placement in your designs.
Square QR codes are exported without built-in padding (also called 'quiet zone') so you have maximum flexibility when placing them in your designs. You can add exactly the amount of white space you need for your specific use case.
If you use a shaped QR code (circle, star, heart, etc.), padding is automatically included as part of the shape design. This is because the shape frame requires space around the QR pattern.
| Method | How to Do It |
|---|---|
| Design software | Add 5-10% white margin around the QR in Canva, Photoshop, etc. |
| Print materials | Leave white space around the QR when placing on flyers, cards, etc. |
| Web/digital | Add CSS padding or margin around the QR image |
| QR Size | Recommended Padding |
|---|---|
| Small (2-3cm) | 2-3mm on each side |
| Medium (5-10cm) | 5-10mm on each side |
| Large (15cm+) | 15mm+ on each side |
| General rule | 5-10% of QR width on each side |
Tip
The 'quiet zone' helps scanners identify where the QR code starts and ends. While modern phone cameras are very good at detecting QR codes even without padding, adding some white space improves scanning reliability, especially in busy designs.
